T-shaped and Sunshaped expertise

Next week I will be giving a presentation about T shaped and Sun shaped expertise. Its a new insight into the  design process where (interface) designers can stay enthusiastic in their work instead of feeling unhappy or being pixel pusher.

Usually the designer is in between brand strategy and user experience. This way the designer needs to translate someone’s input in to someone’s idea of an outcome. This called the T shaped expertise.

Instead of putting the designer in between brand strategy and user experience, the designer’s passion is placed in the middle of a sun shape. The designer now beams his knowledge of other disciplines with overlapping rays moving outwards. In these overlapping fields the best ideas are born because this allows the interface designer to be involved  in the other fields of expertise and give fresh insights.

If a designer’s sun shaped expertise is used instead of using the T shaped expertise model, it delivers a much better result.
